In 1974, an organization known as the Search of ExtraTerrestrial Instituion (SETI) has possessed some kind of alien being, thus beginning some kind of top secret experiment to mix human and alien DNA. This is when the scientists created Sil, a female human-alien hybrid. However, approximately 20 years later, she has escaped. Sil is also determined to reproduce, but needs human male sperm to do so. Now, a team of scientists and federal agents must find Sil and stop her from mating with a human male and reproduce. A group of scientists try to track down and trap a killer alien seductress before she successfully mates with a human. Is 'Species' a groundbreaking, visionary SF movie? No, of course not. Is it silly, trashy, but FUN b-grade exploitation SF in the tradition of Tobe Hooper's 'Lifeforce'? You bet! It isn't quite as entertaining as 'Lifeforce', the original naked space chick movie, but it's a still pretty good way to waste an hour and a half of your life. Why it gets slammed so much is beyond me. Maybe people just don't have a sense of humour. The opening of the movie is terrific. In a lab we see a cold scientist (Ben Kingsley) overseeing the murder of a young girl (Michelle Williams), imprisoned in a glass case. Only she escapes by showing some super human strength. She is immediately pursued by dozens of soldiers, but manages to elude them. We then learn she is in fact a genetic experiment, a mixing of extraterrestrial and human DNA. Kingsley heads up a task force consisting of Michael Madsen, Alfred Molina, Marg Helgenberger and Forest Whitaker, each a specialist in a different field. Pretty soon our alien fugitive mutates into a gorgeous blonde (Natasha Henstridge), who spends most of her time topless. Kingsley and company face a race against time, they must capture the horny alien girl before she screws guys to death(?) or something... Who knows. Henstridge is great to look at and the above average cast give it their best shot with the lame dialogue and cliched scenes. Whitaker's empath character quickly irritates with his constant stating the bleedin' obvious, but I always get a kick out of watching Madsen, here in stereotypical tough guy mode. 'Species' is big dumb fun. A group of scientists try to track down and trap a killer alien seductress (Natasha Henstridge) before she successfully mates with a human.

The film was conceived by writer Dennis Feldman in 1987 while working on "Real Men", another alien story; he had recently achieved success with "The Golden Child". The "Species" story was originally pitched in the style of a police procedural called "The Message". For whatever reason, "Message" failed to find the same level of interest as "Golden Child". In an interestingly twist, he modified it and called it a spec script, and it was picked up!

With MGM and director Roger Donaldson ("Cocktail") involved, the budget became rather respectable. The effects crew consisted of legendary H. R. Giger ("Alien"), the lovable Steve Johnson, and Richard Edlund ("Ghostbusters"). MGM was open to Giger's input on the script, as he feared some aspects might be too close to the "Alien" franchise and would typecast him. Giger had a massive set of props produced and ready to go. He made new drawings very day, focusing on every minute aspect from the inner workings of the alien to the feet. Steve Johnson has noted that 99% of Giger's art is female, which makes him particularly apt for the job. His finished work actually looks more like an homage to "Metropolis" than a redux of "Alien", which is always a good thing.

We even get composer Christopher Young, whose score is vaguely reminiscent of his earlier "Hellraiser" work. Strangely, although Young had worked on many films (mostly horror) since "The Dorm That Dripped Blood" (1982), he has claimed that "Species" was the first one that actually had him working in Los Angeles. This relocation could very well have been his turning point for bigger budget and non-genre films.

The cast is arguably the most impressive of any horror or science fiction film of the 1990s. The film stars Natasha Henstridge in her debut role, and to date (2017) the role she is best known for. But we also have heavy hitters Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen, Alfred Molina, Forest Whitaker and Marg Helgenberger. A pre-fame Michelle Williams carries the beginning of the film, and watching this years later it is fascinating to see that this young woman has blossomed into an Oscar-caliber actress. As others have pointed out, the top-notch cast is what really elevates this from a B-movie (something Roger Corman would have made) to a major motion picture.

Although critics were less than thrilled by the picture, seeing it as sort of fluffy and relying heavily on nudity to carry the picture, it still was a success. Budgeted at $35 million, the film earned a total of $113 million worldwide. And, loved or hated, it really made its mark on pop culture, being one of the more memorable science fiction films more than twenty years on. The story really sticks with you. And, it never hurts to have three (!!) sequels.

The Scream Factory Blu-ray release is phenomenal, pure and simple. They have ported over the special features from the earlier DVD release, which included two audio commentaries and a wide selection of interviews. But then they go above and beyond, giving the film a 4K scan from the interpositive, so you know it will look far better than it ever did on DVD or VHS. And if those old interviews and commentaries were not enough, they have an all-new making-of documentary with Christopher Young, Steve Johnson, and many others. The focus is strongly on the special effects and creature design, which means plenty of entertaining anecdotes from Johnson. I can imagine a film in which a creature like Sil struggles with her dual nature, and tries to find self-knowledge. Like Frankenstein's monster, she would be an object of pity. But that would be way too subtle for Species, which just adds a slick front end to the basic horror vocabulary of things jumping out from behind stuff. When an extraterrestrial alien resembling a normal female child escapes from her isolation chamber, government agent Xavier Fitch (Ben Kingsley) assembles a group of scientists, composed of anthroplogist Dr Stephen Arden (Alfred Molina), molecular biologist Dr Laura Baker (Marg Helgenberger), and empath Dan Smithson (Forest Whitaker), along with mercenary Preston Lennox (Michael Madsen), to hunt down and destroy the rapidly growing "Sil" (Natasha Henstridge) before she manages to breed. The screenplay was written by filmmaker Dennis Feldman, who also produced the movie. However, a novelization, also titled Species (1995), written by American author Yvonne Navarro, was released concurrently with the movie. The film was followed by three sequels: Species II (1998) (1998), Species III (2004) (2004), and Species: The Awakening (2007) (2007). Fitch, Dan, Press, and Laura follow Sil into the sewers. When Fitch is separated from the others, Sil kills him. Press goes deeper into the dewers in an attempt to flush her out. Dan continues to search and comes upon a small naked boy (Kurtis Burow) who has just eaten a rat. As Dan tries to coax the boy to come out, he opens his mouth and strikes at Dan with a long tongue. The boy then begins to morph into a replica of Sil, so Dan shoots him with a flame thrower, and the boy falls into a pool of oil. Suddenly Sil hops forward and pursues Dan while Laura, stuck between some rocks, screams for Press to help. Sil shoots tentacles out from her breasts in an attempt to kill Press, but he fires several bullets into her, knocking her into the oily mass of flames. Sil tries to pull Dan into the flames with her, but Press loads his gun and blows her head off. "She was half us, half something else," Laura comments. "I want to know what was the predatory half." Press simply replies, "The dead half." In the final scene, as Dan, Press, and Laura make their way out of the sewer, two rats meet each other. One opens his mouth and strikes the other one with his long tongue.
